About

Benefits

K.I.D.S. programs provide individuals with special needs the opportunity to get involved, learn new skills and develop long-term, meaningful relationships.

These programs promote healthier lifestyles and encourage people to compete to the best of their individual abilities. Some of the additional benefits that K.I.D.S. members experience include greater self-esteem and confidence, gained friendships and the value of new experiences.

K.I.D.S. believes that social integration in leisure and recreational environments leads to increased independence and a greater quality of life for all participants.

K.I.D.S. is directed and completely staffed by volunteers. Parents, family, friends and community members come together to coach, organize and support all of the K.I.D.S. programs and events.

Lifestyle Management

Another factor that makes K.I.D.S. unique is the positive impact made in families’ lives. Many parents of individuals with special needs feel isolated and alone, not knowing where to turn for help, or how to cope with the challenges that having a child with special needs presents.

This sense of community and a safe, family-friendly environment at K.I.D.S., helps to provide parents with an opportunity to reach out, share information and develop friendships that are just as strong and important as those developed by their children.

The sense of normalcy, acceptance and understanding that K.I.D.S. provides is invaluable.

Our Mission

To improve the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through sports, social, recreational and therapeutic programs; thus building confidence, character and self esteem, while teaching the value of teamwork and cooperation. Every child should have equal access to sports, social and life skill opportunities.

Our Background

Founded in 1995, Kids in Disability Sports, Inc. (K.I.D.S.) was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in 1999.

Providing social and recreational opportunities for individuals with special needs is the main goal of this Lowell, Massachusetts based group.  K.I.D.S. began by offering a specialized basketball program in 1995.  K.I.D.S. quickly grew from a small idea providing for an “unseen” population, into an organization that serves individuals and families throughout the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire. Today, fifteen specialized athletic programs are available. K.I.D.S. also hosts dances, awards banquets, social activities and recreational events throughout the year.
